GM TIS Reprogramming

Servicing newer, increasingly complicated vehicles has put independent repair shops at a disadvantage when compared to auto dealerships that have access to the latest service tools and knowledge databases. Accurately diagnosing and repairing many of these newer vehicles used to require full access to expensive factory service tools.

At the center of this problem lies the ability to reprogram the computers inside newer automobiles. Diagnosing and repairing vehicles often requires reprogramming (reflashing) the vehicle with the latest updates available from the factory. After a vehicle is assembled and sold at a new car dealership, the automaker’s engineering groups often fix common problems found in the field by releasing a new reflash. The new flash is not a recall, and therefore most vehicles on the road will not get the update unless they are brought in to the dealership for servicing. These re-flashes could fix transmission shifting problems, hesitation, rough idle, drivability, check engine lights, emissions quality, poor performance, or any other of a number of common problems. Without the reflashing capabilities, independent repair shops may spend time and money trying to repair an issue with hard parts that cannot be repaired without a calibration flash update.

Before the Mongoose VPW was available, a shop had to invest in a Tech2 or other costly reprogramming system to update calibrations in GM vehicles. Mongoose VPW is a great alternative for independent repair shops that want to reprogram calibrations in most GM vehicles without purchasing expensive, proprietary tools. The Mongoose VPW is compatible with GM’s TIS reprogramming software that normally is used with the Tech2.

Diagnostics

The mongoose VPW is a USB pass-thru device that utilizes the SAE J2534-1 API. What this means is that the Mongoose VPW uses a standard communications interface to the vehicle, allowing it to work with 3rd party diagnostic applications. Different diagnostics and data logging applications supported are currently supported by the Mongoose, with more being added all of the time.

Drew Tech stocks and sells a 3rd party diagnostics and data logging application called PCMScan separately for $99.95. With PCMScan you can retrieve and clear DTC codes, view and record PID data, and perform other general diagnostics. PCMScan running on Mongoose VPW supports all CAN vehicles including GM, Ford, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Volvo, Volkswagen, and many other automaker brands. By 2008 all vehicles on the road will be CAN based and supported by the Mongoose VPW/CAN adapter
